Haplothrips Amyot & Serville View in CoL
Haplothrips Amyot & Serville, 1843: 640 .
Type species Phloeothrips albipennis Burmeister 1836 , by monotypy [= Thrips aculeatus Fabricius, 1803]
Ananthakrishnana Bhatti, 1967: 22 View in CoL . Type species Ananthakrishnana indica Bhatti, 1967 View in CoL , by monotypy. Syn.n.
Bhatti distinguished his new genus solely on the basis that the postocular setae were exceptionally short for a Haplothrips species. Subsequently, in synonymising his species indica View in CoL with euphorbiae, Bhatti (1979) View in CoL added as distinguishing states for Ananthakrishnana View in CoL the sexual dimorphism of the maxillary stylet position, and the unusually reticulate sculpture on the vertex. Sexual dimorphism in the position of maxillary stylets is now known to occur among various unrelated species of Haplothrips ( Dang & Mound 2023) View in CoL . Similarly, reduction in length of the postocular setae also occurs in different species of Haplothrips ( Mound 2024) View in CoL , including Haplothrips leucanthemi View in CoL that is widespread across the Holarctic in the flowers of Ox-eye Daisies, Chrysanthemum leucanthemum View in CoL . The third character state, the presence of sculpture lines on the vertex, also occurs in other species of Haplothrips View in CoL . As a result, there seems to be no justification for considering euphorbiae View in CoL as representing a lineage independent from other Haplothrips species, and Ananthakrishnana View in CoL is here placed into synonymy.
