Kerivoula intermedia Hill and Francis 1984 View in CoL

Small Woolly Bat (Local name not available)

Specimens examined (3).—Krau: TK 152019 (GenBank EU188789 View Materials ), TTU 108181, TTU 108217.

Type locality.— Malaysia (Borneo), Sabah , Lumerao.

Malaysian distribution.—Recorded from Peninsular Malaysia (Pahang: Krau) and Borneo.

Remarks.—This species was captured using harp traps along with K. papillosa and K. minuta in Krau. It is slightly larger, with wider ears, and lacks the conspicuous banding (dark bases) of dorsal fur when compared to K. minuta . We originally assigned our specimens to K. whiteheadi based on the presence of an elongate P2 (following Corbet and Hill 1992). Subsequently, we learned that K. whiteheadi has a more elongate muzzle, with premolars that are oval in cross section and nearly twice as long as they are wide (C. M. Francis, pers. comm.). These characteristics were not obvious in our specimens. Kerivoula intermedia is difficult to distinguish from K. minuta as the unique character separating them is size. Genetic distance value of 17.26% in cyt- b gene between K. intermedia and K. minuta suggests that genetic data is crucial to provide better discrimination between these species.
