Mexican Long-nosed Armadillo

Recent evidence has shown that the Mexican Long-nosed Armadillo, Dasypus mexicanus , is one species of a complex of four that previously were recognized as Dasypus novemcinctus , the Nine-banded Armadillo ( Barthe et al. 2024). All armadillos found in Mexico and the United States are now recognized as D. mexicanus . In Louisiana, this species is found statewide. Since Lowery (1974), new specimen records were reported from St. John the Baptist and West Feliciana parishes. Additionally, nonvouchered records were reported from Ascension, Assumption, Beauregard, Bienville, Catahoula, East Carol, East Feliciana, Iberville, La Salle, Lafourche, Livingston, Madison, Orleans, St. Bernard, Terrebonne, and Union parishes.
