Red Wolf

Lowery (1974) reported records of C. rufus from multiple parishes west of the Mississippi River. Shortly after this however, the last wild individuals of C. rufus were captured in southwestern Louisiana from 1973 to 1980 to establish a captive breeding program, and the species was declared extinct in the wild ( Hinton et al. 2013).
