Differentiation. The syntypes of Schistura notostigma are consistent with the conception of this species by Sudasinghe (2017, 2018) from the south-western river basins of Sri Lanka, from the Kelani to the Nilwala. It differs from S. madhavai Sudasinghe, 2017 by possessing 6–7 (vs 8–9) postdorsal bars and having the width of interspaces and bars subequal (vs. interspaces much narrower than bars); and from S. scripta Sudasinghe, 2018 , by possessing 28–30 (vs 53–76) lateral line pores, and 6–11 (vs 11–20) total bars on the side of the body.
