A native, widespread fresh- and brackish-water species, living in stagnant or slow-flowing water, in plain or hill areas, in most waters of both intra- and extra-Carpathian drainages, including the Danube Delta and the Razim lagoon system ( Bănărescu 1964; Oțel 2007; Cocan & MireȘan 2018; Năstase et al. 2022; Nagy et al. 2023).
