A native, widespread fresh- and brackish-water species, living in slow-flowing water in both intra- and extra-Carpathian drainages: Danube, MureȘ, CriȘ, SomeȘ, Prut; formerly also the TimiȘ, Siret, Olt and the Razim lagoon ( Bănărescu 1964; Oțel 2007; Cocan & MireȘan 2018; Năstase et al. 2022; Nagy et al. 2023).
