A native, widespread fresh- and brackish-water species, living in both flowing and stagnant water, in both intra- and extra-Carpathian drainages, and even in the sea, at the mouths of the Danube ( Bănărescu 1964; Oțel 2007 [as Aspius aspius ]; Cocan & MireȘan 2018; Năstase et al. 2022; Nagy et al. 2023).
