Kept in Esthemopsis C. & R. Felder, 1865 (type species Esthemopsis clonia C. & R. Felder, 1865) since its description, E. aeolia Bates, 1868

(type locality Brazil: Para) is not monophyletic with it, and instead is sister to Mesene argentea Bates, 1866 , the type species of Chimastrum

Godman & Salvin, 1886 that originates within Mesene Doubleday, 1847

(type species Papilio phareus Cramer, 1777 ) (Fig. 18, sequenced specimen in Fig. 19), implying Mesene aeolia (Bates, 1868) comb. nov.
