Diagnosis:

Adult: Mandibles ( Fig. 3A View FIGURE 3 ) without glandular invagination near middle of ventral side. Gular sutures absent medially, present only at ventral base of head as a semicircular suture ( Fig. 7B View FIGURE 7 ). Protibia without external spines or teeth ( Fig. 4A View FIGURE 4 ). Abdominal sternite VIII ( Figs. 5 View FIGURE 5 C-D, 6A-B). Ovipositor present as a pair of 3-segmented appendages (proximal and distal gonocoxites, stylus) ( Fig. 6D View FIGURE 6 , 14B View FIGURE 14 ) or 2-segmented appendages (gonocoxites only, stylus absent).

Larva: Stemmata absent. Mandibles very short and robust, less than one-third as long as head width, more or less asymmetrical, the left mandible deeply excavate near apex ( Figs. 10 View FIGURE 10 D-F), the right mandible similar or with reduced excavation or even a protrusion near apex, both mandibles with multiple subapical teeth and grooves. Urogomphus ( Figs. 13A View FIGURE 13 , E-F) bulbous, with rounded apex bearing a tympaniform sensillum, and a deep internal invagination near inner base.

Genera (species) included: Nine genera (97 species), as follows: Arborilispinus Irmler (2 species), Espeson Schaufuss (23 species), Geomitopsis Scheerpeltz (22 species), Glyptoma Erichson (22 species), Lispinodes Sharp (10 pecies), † Lispinomimus Irmler (1 species), Parespeson Bernhauer (3 species), Pseudespeson Lecoq (13 species), Synaenictus Patrizi (1 species). †Extinct taxon in Dominican amber.
