Subgenus Luciuranus s.s.
Type species: Luciuranus josephi Silveira, Khattar & Mermudes, 2016
Diagnosis
Pronotum with posterior corners apically acute, projected outwards. Males with pygidium almost 2x longer than sternum VIII, ventral keels absent ( Figure 2g View FIGURE 2 ). Syntergite lacking distinct sutures. Sternum IX symmetrical, slightly longer than aedeagus, with posterior margin bearing two long setae ( Figure 2c View FIGURE 2 ). Parameres subparallel-sided, divergent apically, apex slightly sinuose, basal projections short, contiguous but not fused. Females with sternum VII as sclerotized as VIII ( Figure 2e View FIGURE 2 ); genital tract with two spermathecae ( Figure 2b View FIGURE 2 ; Figure S2A View FIGURE 2 ), spermatophore digesting gland small (~3x wider than spermatheca); ovipositor poorly sclerotized.
Remarks
Luciuranus s.s. comprises three species that share similarities in male and female terminalia. They are unique within the genus Luciuranus by lacking important traits hypothesized to be involved in the male clamping device during copula. Namely, males have regular-sized sternum IX, which has arms symmetrical in length, and pygidium without ventral keels, whereas females have evenly sclerotized abdominal sterna. Females of Luciuranus s.s. are unique by having two spermathecae and a small spermatophore digesting gland. For the sake of clarification, the correct year of publication of both L. desideratus and L. magnoculus is 2018, even though the heading of their description (cf. Silveira et al., 2018) says 2017.
The following character states are potential synapomorphies of Luciuranus s.s.: arms of male sternum IX
symmetrical in length (char. 31:0); paired apical setae absent from sternum IX (char. 35:1); apices of dorso-basal projections of parameres contiguous (char. 39:0); bursa copulatrix bearing two spermathecae (char. 54:1; Figure S3 View FIGURE 3 ).
