Pucciniasporonites arcotensis Ramanujam & Ramachar [as ‘arcotense’], Records of the Geological Survey of India 113(5): 82 (1980) / IF 483757
Typification Details: Holotype SI PR 9467 ; Host-Substratum / Locality: From Neogene ( Miocene ) ( Tamil Nadu)
Reference: Ramanujam and Ramachar (1980)
Note: Fossil Basidiomycota of the Neogene (Miocene) period recorded from India.
The analysis of data obtained from the collected literature in the present study demonstrated that approximately 545 species of rust fungi, belonging to different genera, have been reported to date from India. The earliest record can be traced back to the late 19 th century when Ravenelia indica Berk. was established by Berkeley (1853) on the leaves of Abrus sp. from Jharkhand. This laid the foundation stone for the discovery of many new rust fungi from India. A total of 93 rust species were discovered during the 19 th century and 423 in the 20 th century, whereas a total of 32 new rust species and one new family (Yadav et al. 2023) have been proposed to date in the present century ( Figure 2 View FIGURE 2 ). A fossilized rust fungus of the Neogene (Miocene) period, namely, Pucciniasporonites arcotensis Ramanujam & Ramachar , was also reported from Tamil Nadu ( India) (Ramanujam and Ramachar 1980). The state-wide data analysis depicted that a considerable number of rust fungi have been reported from 23 states of the Indian Union , of which the highest 106 species were recorded from Himachal Pradesh followed by Tamil Nadu (87), Maharashtra (63), Uttarakhand (62), Karnataka (59), Kerela (31) and Andhra Pradesh (21). The remaining states displayed the occurrence of rust fungal species number under twenty ( Figure 2 View FIGURE 2 ).
