Distribution in Mexico. This species is distributed in the central and southern parts of the country ( Fig. 7 View FIGURE 7 ). Austrolimnius formosus occurs in three biogeographical provinces forming the Mesoamerican dominion of the Neotropical region in Mexico (as defined by Morrone 2014). The species is present in streams below 2,000 m.a.s.l., with most of its records in the Balsas Basin, Pacific Lowlands, and Veracruzan biogeographical provinces. The localities in Colima, the western and southernmost (below 1,000 meters) parts of Chiapas, and southern Guerrero are in the Pacific Lowlands province. Records in the Balsas Basin province are those from Estado de México, Michoacán, and Morelos. Also, records from central, northern, and eastern Chiapas and those from Tabasco and Veracruz are in the Veracruzan province. Lastly, records from southern Chiapas (above 1,000 m.a.s.l.) are on the border between the Pacific Lowlands and the Chiapas Highlands provinces, and the record from north-central Chiapas is in this latter province.
