Fig. 29A View FIGURE 29

Epitonium cf. kostejanum ( Boettger, 1902) — Schneider et al. 2009: 74, fig. 5A [non Mazescala kostejana ( Boettger, 1902) ].

Illustrated material. BSPG 2007 X 42, SL: 8.2 mm, MD: 6.8 mm, Gurlan (Bavaria, Germany), Fig. 29A View FIGURE 29 .

Revised description. Only a fragment of the last whorl is available, showing a convex whorl without basal angulation nor peribasal cord. Sculpture of about 20 prosocline, moderately narrow, raised lamellae, persisting over base with only weakly rolled over crests. Interspaces smooth. Short fasciole with prominent growth lines. Aperture ovate with nearly straight columella. Columellar callus forming narrow rim, attached to fasciole, parietal callus delicate. Peristome thickened by varix, duplex with continuous inner layer. No umbilicus.

Discussion. This species is characterized by its lamellae, which are much finer than in any of its Paratethyan congeners and which are not rolled over on the base. More material will be necessary to clarify the status of this probably undescribed species.

Paleoenvironment. Agitated rocky shore and coastal environments ( Schneider et al. 2009).

Distribution in Central Paratethys. Ottnangian (Early Miocene): North Alpine Foreland Basin: Gurlan ( Germany) ( Schneider et al. 2009).

Genus Hyaloscala de Boury, 1890

Type species. Scala clathratula Kanmacher, 1798 View in CoL ; original designation by de Boury (1889: 246). Present-day, British Isles.

Diagnosis. “ Shell small and translucent, suture simple, umbilicus closed; axial ribs thin, sometimes low and numerous; intervals smooth and glossy, sometimes with very faint and irregular spiral grooves; peristome fairly thin, not or only weakly auriculate.” ( Kilburn 1985: 293).

Discussion. This genus has not been recorded from the Paratethys sea so far, although it was represented in the circum-Mediterranean region since the Miocene by Hyaloscala exilis de Boury, 1912 and H. micans Cossmann & Peyrot, 1922 , from the Burdigalian of France, Hyaloscala miotrinacria ( Sacco, 1891) , from the Late Miocene of Italy and H. occidentalis sp. nov., H. rainesi sp. nov. and H. rustica sp. nov. from the Middle Miocene (Langhian/ early-middle Badenian) of Austria.
