Barolineocerus bispinus Freytag, 2008: 49 View in CoL , figures 1, 3, 8–10.

Barolineocerus declivus Freytag, 2008: 52 View in CoL , figures 14–16 syn. nov.

Type locality: 13 km W of Risquetout, Montsinéry-Tonnegrande, French Guiana.

Diagnosis (based on material collected in Brazil, French Guiana, and Peru). Pronotal macula almost extends to hind margin of pronotum (Figs. 1A, M, 2G). Claval macula extends to scutellum apex (Figs. 1A, M, 2G). Abdominal sternite II apodeme extending to posterior margin of sternite III ( Fig. 8B View FIGURE 8 ). Pygofer posterior margin without short ventral process; without median process ( Figs. 8C–D View FIGURE 8 ). Valve with anterior margin concave and posterior one convex ( Fig. 8E View FIGURE 8 ). Subgenital plate without dorsal process; apex pointed ( Figs. 8F–G View FIGURE 8 ).Aedeagus without dorsal median process; without dorsal subapical ridge; with pair of preapical ventral spine-like processes near base of gonopore ( Figs. 8K–M View FIGURE 8 ). Anal tube, laterobasal process with base sinuous at anterior margin, apex distinctly pointed ( Figs. 8C–D View FIGURE 8 ).

Measurements (mm). Males (n= 30), total length (to apex of forewing): 3.99–5.37; median length of crown: 0.18–0.33; length of crown close to eyes: 0.20–0.30; width of head: 1.57–1.99; width of crown between eyes: 0.88–1.19; length of pronotum: 0.42–0.64; length of scutellum: 0.82–1.19; width of pronotum: 1.51–1.83; width of scutellum: 1.11–1.47; length of face: 1.00–1.31; width of face between eyes: 0.89–1.18; distance between ocelli: 0.32–0.45; ocellocular distance: 0.23–0.31; length of clypeus: 0.32–0.46; basal width of clypeus: 0.21–0.30; apical width of clypeus: 0.30–0.41; length of forewing: 3.27–4.26.

Female genitalia (single specimen dissected). Sternite VII, about 2x wider than long ( Fig. 9B View FIGURE 9 ). Pygofer higher than long; with sparse microsetae, without macrosetae ( Fig. 9A View FIGURE 9 ). First valvifer about 2x longer than high ( Fig. 9C View FIGURE 9 ). First valvula with dorsal sculptured area on apical half, with sculpturing elongate derived from a striated pattern ( Fig. 9C View FIGURE 9 ); tapered towards the apex, apex rounded ( Fig. 9D View FIGURE 9 ). Second valvifer about five times higher than long ( Fig. 9G View FIGURE 9 ). Second valvula, dorsal margin with 16 teeth without denticles, in lateral view; duct area with maculose sculpturing; ventral margin slightly membranous, without preapical prominence or denticles ( Fig. 9E View FIGURE 9 ); apex without denticles ( Fig. 9F View FIGURE 9 ). Gonoplac with sparse microsetae distributed along ventral margin, in lateral view; without macrosetae; apex rounded ( Fig. 9G View FIGURE 9 ). Other characters as in generic description.

Distribution. Brazil (Amazonas, Maranhão, Pará, Roraima); Ecuador (Orellana); French Guiana (Montsinéry-Tonnegrande, Régina, Roura, Saint-Laurent, Saül ); Peru (Madre de Dios).

Holotype condition. Body covered with sparse Lepidopteran scales.

Remarks. Freytag (2008) provided illustrations of the dorsal view of the head and thorax, male genital capsule (lateral view), subgenital plate (ventral view), connective, style and aedeagus (ventral view), and undissected female terminalia (ventral view) of B. bispinus ; and included an illustration of the male genital capsule (lateral view), subgenital plate (ventral view), connective, style, and aedeagus (ventral view) of B. declivus . Upon a thorough examination of the holotypes of B. declivus (Figs. 1M–O) and B. bispinus (Figs. 1E–H), we came to conclusion they are conspecific. Freytag’s (2008) diagnostic character for B. declivus describing an aedeagus without spines at the apex is inaccurate. The holotype, in fact, exhibits a short pair of ventroapical processes, akin to those observed in the type of B. bispinus . Furthermore, Freytag (2008) in his key to species, states that both B. declivus and B. bispinus have the subgenital plate rounded at the apex, as he illustrates in his figures ( Freytag 2008: Figs. 9 View FIGURE 9 , 15 View FIGURE 15 ), however both holotypes have plates with short, pointed apices (as in Fig. 8F View FIGURE 8 ), but depending on the angle of observation one may miss this characteristic. The remaining aspects of male genitalia are indistinguishable between these two holotypes, with only minor variation noted in the shape of the basolateral processes of the anal tube. This process is slightly bent in B. declivus and straight in B. bispinus . Importantly, this same variation is observed among specimens examined from Brazil. Consequently, B. declivus is herein treated as a new synonym of B. bispinus . Specimens vary in the hind tibia AD row with 6–7 cucullate setae and PD row with 13–19 cucullate setae.

Barolineocerus bispinus is most similar to B. acius as noted in the Remarks on the latter. However, it can be distinguished from the latter by absence of the pair of ventral process on the pygofer posterior margin ( Fig. 8D View FIGURE 8 ) and aedeagus without a dorsal median process on the aedeagal shaft ( Fig. 8K View FIGURE 8 ).
