Subgenus Ablabesmyia Johannsen View in CoL
Ablabesmyia Johannsen, 1905: 135 ; Roback 1971: 365, 1985: 178.
Remarks. The subgeneric diagnosis is given by Roback (1971, 1985).
The males of Ablabesmyia s. str. differ from those of other subgenera in the combination of the foretibia with a median band at near central position, and the gonostylus with a megaseta expanded apically.
According to Oliveira et al. (2008), the pupae are separable from those of other subgenera by the aeropyle tube club-shaped on the apex of thoracic horn. However, the Japanese species belonging to Karelia also features the aeropyle tube club-shaped.
Generally the larvae are distinct from those of other subgenera in the maxillary palp with a basal segment subdivided into three or more parts (Oliveira et al. l. c.).
Roback (1985) divided the subgenus Ablabesmyia into five species groups, A. ( A.) rhamphe group, A. ( A.) monilis group, A. ( A.) simpsoni group, A. ( A.) mallochi group and A. ( A.) aspera group, on the basis of the adult and larval features.
