H. cooloola and H. magela have characters different from the morphologically rather uniform remaining species. In addition H. magela has a restricted geographical range within the Northern Territory, whereas H. atratus (larva still unknown), H. comitatus and H. theischingeri are restricted to north-eastern Queensland and H. gouldii and H. heteroclytus are more or less confined to south-eastern Australia. Only H. heteroclytus , the only Hemigomphus occurring in southern inland Queensland, slightly overlaps the range of the three north-eastern species ( Theischinger 2000b; Theischinger & Endersby 2009).
