Genus Cycloperipsocus Li, 1993 View in CoL

Cycloperipsocus Li, 1993: 377 View in CoL .

Type species: Cycloperipsocus pangi Li, 1993: 378 View in CoL , by original designation.

Diagnosis. Small in size with forewing length no more than 2.0 mm. Body black-and-white colored in general, abdomen sometimes dark reddish-purple on ventral and lateral sides. Forewing broad, generally cream white with taupe markings at base, R area and M area. Male: Clunium slightly extended at dorsodistal margin, without any process or serrations. Epiproct semicircular. Paraproct with ovate posterior lobe. Hypandrium simple. Phallosome somewhat gourd-shaped in dorsal view, apex rounded or gently pointed. Phallobase closed. Parameres strong. Penis bulb (sclerites on endophallus) consists of a middle thorn and a pair of lateral lobes; the middle thorn expanded at base, reflexed upward at the middle of its posterior margin and projects forward into spike shape with sclerotization gradually reduced; lateral lobes usually expanded into hemispheric shape, inner margin with a spine pointed forward. Female: Subgenital plate with pigmented area V-shaped; posterior lobe (egg guide) short, trapeziform in ventral view with its outer margin folded inward. Gonapophyses: ventral valve broadened, apically narrowed; dorsal valve broad, oblong, about 1.5 times as long as its width, with a row of long setae along distal margin; external valve rectangular, about half the length of dorsal valve, slightly setose.

Known distribution. China, Laos, Indonesia, Australia.

Habitat. Live trees. Conifer trees (e.g., Cunninghamia lanceolata , Calocedrus rupestris ) are preferred but can also be observed on broadleaf trees.

Remarks. The species C. edwardsi , transferred by Li (1993) from Peripsocus , is here considered to be excluded from Cycloperipsocus due to the following characteristics: considerably large body size with forewing length over 4.0 mm (in male) [no cycloperipsocids with forewing length more than 2.0 mm]; forewing (of male) elongate rather than broad with markings very different from those of most Cycloperipsocus ; female with wings strongly brachypterous [ Cycloperipsocus with well-developed wings in both male and female]; penis bulb with three pairs of sclerites but without a middle thorn; gonapophyses with ventral valve not broadened, external valve large and heavily setose. By contrast, the placement of the other Australian species C. norfolkensis in Cycloperipsocus is maintained considering that its genital characteristics strongly resemble those of the Asian species, though it presents different coloration and with no markings on forewing.
