Abana minuta Sauceda-V & Takiya, sp. nov.
( Fig. 14 View FIGURE 14 )
Diagnosis. Body coloration ( Fig. 14A, B View FIGURE 14 ) mostly yellow and purplish-castaneous; anterior portion of crown ( Fig. 14A View FIGURE 14 ) and frons ( Fig. 14B View FIGURE 14 ) yellow, crown with contrasting dark maculae posteriorly; pronotum ( Fig. 14A View FIGURE 14 ) castaneous; anterior margin with a black marginal stripe, anterolateral yellow paired maculae present; male forewing ( Fig. 14A, B View FIGURE 14 ) purplish-castaneous, with one broad preapical ivory transcommisural stripe aligned to clavus apex. Crown anterior margin ( Fig. 14A View FIGURE 14 ) subtriangular, ending truncate; anterior portion ( Fig. 14B View FIGURE 14 ), in lateral view, straight, not inflated; disk with a distinct depression; M-shaped elevation bordering posterior margin present and conspicuous. Connective ( Fig. 14E View FIGURE 14 ) with arms converging anteriorly; base of arms with a U-shaped dorsal rim. Style ( Fig. 14E View FIGURE 14 ) with apodeme wide and long, as long as apophysis length; inner lobe rounded; apical portion almost as long as wide; not extending to connective apex. Aedeagal shaft ( Fig. 14F–H View FIGURE 14 ) with anterodorsal projections slender and long. Dorsal connective ( Fig. 14F–H View FIGURE 14 ) sclerotized; submedian acute process conspicuous.
Description. Total length: male (n = 1) 14.5 mm (to the tip of the wings), 15.1 mm (to the tip of the abdomen).
External structures. Frons evenly convex medially. Forewing ( Fig. 14A, B View FIGURE 14 ) with base of third and fourth apical cells aligned. Other characters as in A. confusa sp. nov.
Coloration. Body coloration ( Fig. 14A, B View FIGURE 14 ) mostly yellow, except in dorsal view. Crown ( Fig. 14A View FIGURE 14 ) ivory, except for two triangular black areas on posterior portion, extending from antennal ledges to midline of crown on posterior margin. Frons ( Fig. 14B View FIGURE 14 ) completely ivory, continuing to anterodorsal portion of gena ( Fig. 14B View FIGURE 14 ), posteroventral portion of gena ( Fig. 14B View FIGURE 14 ) black, continuing black area of crown to clypeus. Clypeus ( Fig. 14B View FIGURE 14 ) black. Pronotum ( Fig. 14A View FIGURE 14 ) castaneous, with two anterolateral ivory maculae continuing laterally to proepimeron; anterior portion margined with black. Mesonotum ( Fig. 14A View FIGURE 14 ) dark brown with two black lateral maculae on anterior portion, before scutellar suture, not reaching lateral margin. Thorax ( Fig. 14B View FIGURE 14 ), in lateral view, varying from ivory to yellow, with a small dark brown central macula on upper part of anepisternum. Forewing ( Fig. 14A, B View FIGURE 14 ) purplish-castaneous, with one anteapical non-transcommissural broad ivory stripe, restricted to corium, reaching costal margin, aligned to clavus apex; apex fuscous becoming yellow. Legs ( Fig. 14B View FIGURE 14 ) almost completely yellow, with some small brown areas mostly at apex of hind femora and tarsomeres of all legs. Abdomen ( Fig. 14B View FIGURE 14 ) completely yellow.
Male terminalia. Subgenital plates ( Fig. 14C View FIGURE 14 ), in lateral view, almost reaching the pygofer apex but ending before. Style ( Fig. 14E View FIGURE 14 ) with apodeme wide and long, as long as the apophysis length. Aedeagal shaft ( Fig. 14F View FIGURE 14 ), in lateral view, with preapical dorsal spiniform process extending dorsally slightly beyond dorsal margin of lateral projections. Other characters as in A. confusa sp. nov.
Female. Unknown.
Distribution. Peru (Huánuco Region) ( Fig. 30 View FIGURE 30 ).
Material examined. Type material: Holotype, ♂: PERU: Huánuco: 9 km S Tingo María, Pte. Cuevas , 9º21’27”S, 75º59’32”W, 620 m a.s.l., 2002-x-24, manual, C.H. Dietrich, DNA voucher Entomologia DZRJ ENT6583 ( MUSM). GoogleMaps
Etymology. The specific epithet ‘ minuta ’ comes from the Latin adjective “minűtus” which means “small” or “diminished”. This name was given due to the small size of this species compared to the other species of Abana .
Remarks. This species is only described from a single specimen (the male holotype), which shares a very similar wing color pattern with some female specimens of A. horvathi s.s. ( Fig. 28A, B View FIGURE 28 ). However, it can be distinguished from the species within this complex by the following characters: (1) small size, less than 16 mm, (2) frons ( Fig. 14B View FIGURE 14 ) entirely ivory (in A. horvathi s.l., the ventral third of frons is distinctly dark), (3) anepisternum ( Fig. 14B View FIGURE 14 ) with a small dark brown central macula on the upper part (in A. horvathi s.l., it is almost completely to completely dark), and (4) abdomen ( Fig. 14B View FIGURE 14 ) completely yellow (in A. horvathi s.l., it is predominantly dark with some yellow areas). No COI sequence information was obtained for this species because DNA quality was too low.
