REMARKS
This largest African squirrel occurs in rainforest from Sierra Leone to Kenya. It is an arboreal species. In a molecular phylogeny of the Sciuridae , Protoxerus is sister to a clade including Paraxerus and Funisciurus ( Steppan et al. 2004) , however, neither Allosciurus nor Epixerus were included in that phylogeny. One species is recognized in the genus, which requires further taxonomic revision.
