Diagnosis. Body relatively stout, dorsum mainly black, with short pubescence ( Fig. 17a View FIGURE 17 ). Head short and wide, antennomere I mainly black with dark-yellowish markings, antennomeres II–IV black; median part of transverse swelling black, mandibular plates and maxillary plates dark-yellowish, anteclypeus dark-yellowish with black markings, labrum mainly black with median part dark-yellowish, labiomeres III+IV blackish-brown to black, preocellar spots cuneiform, relatively small, attached to inner margin of compound eyes. Pronotum short and wide, lateral margin convex, hemelytra mainly black with dull-yellowish markings, dark marking on median part of exocorium reaching the outer margin of exocorium except extremely pale individuals, endocorium with an eye spot on basal half and with scattered pale spots on apical half ( Fig. 17b–d View FIGURE 17 ); femora with wide, black stripe on ventral side and black spots on lateral side, tibiae with black spots on basal and apical end, fore- and middle tibia with an interrupted black stripe on dorsal side, tarsomere III of each leg dark-brown. Male paramere with long setae on dorsal side, process sensualis with a small tuft of short setae ( Fig. 17e–g View FIGURE 17 ), parandria with rounded apex, inner margin shallowly concave, inner half with weaker sclerotization ( Fig. 17h View FIGURE 17 ). Female subgenital plate nearly triangular, with pale margin.

Habitats. Saldula saltatoria occupies various habitats, including particularly unstable environments such as shallow and temporary puddles ( Fig. 24 View FIGURES 20–24 ).

Distribution in China. This species is widely distributed in China, including Jilin (new record), Inner Mongolia ( Wang & Li 2012, Vinokurov et al. 2018), Hebei ( Drake & Maa 1954), Shanxi (new record), Xinjiang ( Chen & Lindskog 1994, Vinokurov et al. 2012, Vinokurov et al. 2018), Yunnan (new record), Qinghai (Vinokurov 2015, Vinokurov et al. 2018), Sichuan ( Vinokurov et al. 2018), Taiwan ( Drake & Maa 1954, Vinokurov et al. 2018).

General distribution. Widely distributed across Nearctic, Palearctic, Panamanian, Saharo-Arabian and Sino-Japanese regions ( Schuh et al. 1987, Larivière & Larochelle 2018).
