Otiorhynchus (Misenatus) johannae Colonnelli View in CoL , new species urn:lsid:zoobank.org:act:9D17B17E-02D3-473F-8A3C-8B59F699BFF5
Type material: “ ELLAS - Kríti (Lasíthi) / Diktí óros – m 1100 / N35.09.36 E25.31.03 / 30.IV.2017 – E. Colonnelli ”, 1 ♂ holotype and 1 ♂ 1 ♀ paratypes ( ECRI); same data, except for G. Meloni collector, 1 ♂ 1 ♀ paratypes ( ECRI) .
Description.
Male holotype. Length 7.0 mm. Piceous, rather strongly shining except elytra quite opaque, claws honey-red. Rostrum 0.75 times as long as wide at its widest point between pterigia, scrobes open forward, rostral punctures large and coarse. Epistome not very small, V-shaped, its posterior margin keeled. Epifrons slightly concave and keeled at sides, keels slightly curved toward middle at the extreme base of rostrum which has a thin keel at its middle from base to epistome. Scape rather short and gradually a little thickening toward the barely clubbed apex. Antennomeres 1 and 2 elongate, the second a trifle longer than the first; third to seventh hardly longer than wide; club fusiform, about as long as the three preceding antennomeres. Head moderately conical, quite convex, 0.5 times as long as wide at base, eyes subdorsal, slightly oval and pretty strongly convex; interocular distance 1.25 times that of epifrons at its narrowest point, punctures on head similar to those on rostrum, vertex strongly convex and microreticulate. Pronotum convex, 0.9 times as long as wide, sides rounded, maximum width at middle, anterior margin almost as wide as base.
Descripción.
Holotipo macho. Largo: 7,0 mm.
Dorsum and sides of pronotum with convex shining granules larger on superior than on lateral surface. Elytra oval, 1.45 times longer than wide, maximum width just apicad of middle.
Strial punctures huge, subrectangular, quite deeply impressed, distance between one another shorter than the diameter of one of them; punctures becaming smaller and less deep toward sides. Interstriae about as wide as striae and fairly flat, minutely and sparsely punctured. Dorsal clothing formed by sparse whitish excessively minute setae, those barely visible on elytra. Legs quite strong, femora clubbed and finely toothed, tibiae slightly sinuate, their apical half slightly concave and with some minute teeth, tarsi pretty short. Vestiture on legs by almost recumbent elongate silver setae, apical comb of setae golden-yellow. Urosternites quite flat, finely and sparsely punctured, diminishing in length from 1 to 5, all clothed by very thin rather elongate silvery setae. Habitus as in figs 7 and 8, aedeagus as in figs 11 and 12.
Paratypes. Males are almost indistinguishable from the holotype, females have elytra just a little plumper than those of males and ventrites weakly convex. Length: 6.9-7.2 mm.
Etymology.
This new species is named after Giovanna Meloni, who helped me in collecting this and many other weevils in a span of over 40 years, as a very partial acknowledgement of my wife long patience.
Diagnosis and comparative notes.
According to Alonso-Zarazaga et al. (2017) only four species are comprised in Misenatus Reitter, 1912, namely the relatively widespread Mediterranean
O. lugens (Germar, 1817) View in CoL , O. trojanus Stierlin, 1861 View in CoL from Albania, Greece and Turkey, O. spartanus Kirsch, 1880 View in CoL from Taygetos mount in mainland Greece, and O. biroi Csiki, 1943 View in CoL from Psiloritis mountains of Crete.
A key to species, O. biroi View in CoL excepted, was published by Reitter (1914 a), according to which O. lugens View in CoL and O. spartanus View in CoL can be immediately differentiated from O. johannae View in CoL by their strongly dentate femora and much more convex, plumper and somewhat granulate elytra. On the other hand, the larger (mm 9.0-11.0) Cretan O. biroi View in CoL has elytra more elongate and striae formed by widely separate minute punctures, pronotal granules dorsally flat and partially umbilicate, and eyes much smaller and strongly convex (Ciski 1943; pers. obs.). The same last character immediately separates O. trojanus View in CoL from the new species above described (figs 7- 10).
Bionomy.
Adults of the new species were found beating shady branches of low bushes somewhat protected by the strong wind in the open woody habitat of fig. 13, together with more common specimens of O. (Nehrodistus) obesus Stierlin, 1861 .
