sp. nov.

Xiphidiopsis (Xiphidiopsis) brachysis sp. nov., Chinese name: ØḰ剑ª

( Figure 1 View FIGURE 1 )

Description. Male. Body relatively large for this subfamily.

Head. Fastigium verticis conical, slightly projecting forwards, apex rounded with a longitudinal sulcus on the dorsum ( Fig. 1A View FIGURE 1 ). Eyes ovoid, protruding forwards. Apical segment of maxillary palpus lightly longer than subapical one, apex faintly inflated ( Fig. 1B View FIGURE 1 ).

Thorax. Anterior margin of pronotum almost straight, posterior margin rounded; lateral lobe faintly longer than deep, humeral sinus distinct ( Fig. 1A–B View FIGURE 1 ).

Legs. All femora unarmed on ventral surfaces. Fore coxa with 1 spine on anterior margin. Fore tibia with 3–4 internal and 5 external long spines on ventral surface, tibial tympana open on both sides. Middle tibia with 3–5 long spines on both sides of ventral surface respectively. Hind tibia with 24–29 internal and external short spines of dorsal surface respectively, bearing 1 pair of dorsal apical spurs and 2 pairs of ventral apical spurs.

Tegmina and wings. Tegmina elongated, anterior and posterior margins nearly parallel, apices rounded; hind wings lightly longer than tegmina.

Abdomen. Tenth abdominal tergite moderately extended backwards, posterior margin with a depressed and downcurved process, which apex divided in the midline ( Fig. 1C–D, F View FIGURE 1 ). Cercus stout at base, apical two thirds compressed and incurved, apex lightly narrow, tip rounded; the inner surface of basal third with a broad lobe, it markedly curved inwards, apical area narrow and tip rounded ( Fig. 1D–F View FIGURE 1 ). Basal half of subgenital plate broad, apical half narrowing, posterior margin with a acute angle-shaped notch, lateral lobes with apices acute; styli short, inserted on ventral surface of subapical area of subgenital plate ( Fig. 1E View FIGURE 1 ).

Coloration. Body green. Eyes brown.

Female. Unknown.

Material examined. Holotype, ♂, Maliugou , Jiguanshan, Chongzhou, Sichuan, China, 15 July, 2016, collected by Hai-Jian Wang . Other specimen: 1♂, Tianquan, Sichuan, China, 13 July, 2024, collected by Ya-Fei Zhu.

Measurements (mm). Body length: 14.3–14.9; pronotum length: 4.4–5.4; hind femur length: 10.4–11.2; tegmen length: 18.7–20.3.

Discussion. The male of this new species can be distinguished from other Xiphidiopsis species by comparing: male cerci, subgenital plate and the posterior process of tenth abdominal tergite.

Etymology. The name of this new species is derived from the short posterior process of male tenth abdominal tergite, the Latin brachys- meaning short.

Distribution. Sichuan ( China).
