Genus Niphargus Schiödte, 1849

New synonyms: Niphargellus Schellenberg,1938 ; Chaetoniphargus Karaman & Sket, 2018 .

Recently synonymized genera (from 2000 onwards): Carinurella Sket, 1971 ( Brancelj et al. 2020: 215); Niphargopsis (Chevreux, 2022) ( Fišer et al. 2008: 674) ; Niphargobates Sket, 1981 ; Niphargobatoides Karaman, 2016 ; and Chaetoniphargus Karaman & Sket, 2018 ( Sket and Karaman 2018: 97). However, the description of Chaetoniphargus was reported by Sket and Karaman (2018) in their references as ‘in print’, suggesting a synonymization of a ‘nomen nudum’ before name availability. To correct this error, Chaetoniphargus is reported herein as a new synonymy, considering that, as a result of the previously illustrated phylogeny, it is a member of the Niphargus ‘megaclade’.
