(a) Subsp. epithymum View in CoL (inch subsp. trifola (Bab.) Hegi , C. trifola Bab. , C. alba C. Presi ): Flowers 3 4 (-5)m m (rarely 2-5 mm); glomerules 7-10 mm in diameter. Calyx shorter than corollatube, not fleshy; lobes of calyx and corolla triangular to lanceolate, acute or acuminate to subulate. Styles (including stigmas) much longer than ovary. On shrubs and herbs, most frequently on Calluna vulgaris , Ulex europaeus and Trifolium spp. Almost throughout the range o f the species.

C. stenoloba Bornm. & O. Schwarz , Feddes Repert. (Beiti.) 26: 56 (1924), known only from Weimar in Germany, was probably an abnormal variant of 12(a); it is now extinct.
