Deciduous or evergreen shrubs, sometimes climbing. Twigs usually angled. Leaves opposite or alternate, imparipinnate; leaflets entire. Flowers hermaphrodite, usually in terminal or axillary cymes. Calyx campanulate, with 4-9 lobes. Corolla hypocrateriform, with 4-9 lobes, convolute in bud. Stamens epipetalous; anthers large; filaments short. Fruit a black berry, usually didymous. J. odoratissimum L. , Sp. Pl. 7 (1753), from Madeira, is cultivated in S.E. France for the perfume extracted from the flowers. It is like 3 but has almost terete branches and somewhat larger flowers and fruit. 1 Leaves opposite
