Deciduous shrubs. Leaves opposite, entire or serrate, simple (in most species). Inflorescences axillary. Flowers yellow, heterostylous, appearing before or with the leaves. Calyx and corolla 4-lobed. Ovary with several ovules. Fruit a capsule.
