Inflorescence 20-30 cm, hemispherical, much-branched; lower branches mostly nonflowering; scales 4-6 mm. Spikes 1-1-5 cm, with 6 spikelets per cm; spikelets l(-2)-flowered. Bracts with narrow hyaline margin; inner bract c. 2m m; outer bract c. 0-5mm. Calyx c. 3 mm. Corolla c. 4 mm. 2/z = 26-27. Gypsaceous soils, usually inland. • S.E. Spain (Almeria to Alicante). Hs. Coastal populations are sometimes intermediate between 56 and 85, and have well-developed leaves at anthesis, large spikes and more incurved spikelets. Plants intermediate between 77 and 85 are very common. A rather distinct variant ( var. diegoi (Sennen) Pignatti , L. diegoi Sennen ) has 7- to 9-veined leaves and a larger inflorescence (up to 60 cm) and is perhaps a hybrid between 85 and 77(b).
