Plant 20-40 cm, pubescent and with ferruginous hairs throughout. Leaves 10-25 cm; petiole up to 17 cm. Lamina reniform to suborbicular, cordate at base, up to 12 cm wide, lobed to J of radius; lobes coarsely and irregularly dentate. Scape 15-35 cm. Bracts 5-15 mm, laciniate. Flowers 5-20. Calyx divided to J-way, lobes acute to acuminate. Corolla c. 1 cm, l |- 2 times as long as calyx, divided to |, purple-violet. Stamens included, apiculate. Style exserted. Capsule (4-)5-7(-9) mm. Seeds c. 40, polyhedral, with narrow wings on the angles. 2« = 24. Mountain woods and other damp places; calcicole. C. & E. Russia; mountains o f S.E. & S.C. Europe from Bulgaria and E. Small plants from Ural, subglabrous and lacking ferruginous hairs, with dentate bracts, deeply lobed leaves and few-flowered umbels have been called C. altaica Losinsk. , Acta Inst. Bot. Acad. Sci. U RSS (Ser. 1) 3: 243 (1936), but they merge into and are not clearly separated from 1.
