Subgen. Auriculastrum Schott . Heterostylous. Farinose or efarinose. Hairs glandular, sometimes minute. Leaves with involute vernation, fleshy or coriaceous, not rugose. Bracts not gibbous or saccate. Calyx rounded, not angled.
Numerous hybrids are known; many are fertile and some are frequent, especially 14 x 19,25 x 29,28 x 29. The last, P. x pubescens Jacq. , is occasionally found outside the area of 29, P. hirsuta .
