Plant 50-150 cm, usually glabrous. Leaves 5-14 x 4-13 cm, broadly ovate, coarsely sinuate-dentate. Calyx 25-40 mm, angled; teeth 3-5 mm, subequal. Corolla 4-6 cm, infundibuliform, white. Capsule 5-8 x 4-6 cm, ovoid, erect, dehiscing regularly, with stout, conical spines 10-30 mm, the upper longer than the lower. Cultivated fo r ornament and locally naturalized in the Mediterranean region. [Ga Hs It Si.] (E. Asia.)
