Usually perennial, more or less densely greyish-floccose- tomentose; stems 70-100 cm. Basal leaves 12-25 x 4-12 cm, oblong-ovate to -lanceolate, acute to acuminate, entire; petiole 5-12 cm. Inflorescence lax, simple. Bracts 6—15(—25) mm, linear; pedicels 4-9 mm. Calyx 4—8(—10) mm; lobes linear- to oblonglanceolate. Corolla 30-40 mm in diameter. Stamens 5, the upper with densely violet-villous filaments, the lower with decurrent anthers and glabrous filaments. Capsule 6-10 mm, pyramidal-ovoid. • Mountains o f S. & S.E. Spain. Hs. V. charidemi Murb. , Lunds Univ. Ârsskr. nov. ser., 29(2): 161 (1933), described from a single plant from S.E. Spain (Cabo de Gata), with persistent white indumentum, triangular-lanceolate bracts, and corolla 18-20 mm in diameter, is doubtfully distinct from 39.
