Perennial herbs with a fleshy, horizontal rhizome. Leaves alternate, simple. Flowers solitary in leaf-axils. Calyx campanulate, shallowly 5-lobed, accrescent. Corolla cylindrical to campanulate, shallowly 5-lobed. Stamens 5, included, inserted at base of corolla. Stigma capitate. Fruit a circumscissile capsule, surrounded by the calyx.
