scientific name

Acinos alpinus subsp. majoranifolius
status

(b) Subsp. majoranifolius (Miller) P. W. Ball, Bot. Jour. Linn. Soc. 65: 344 (1972)

( Melissa majoranifolia Miller , Calamintha alpina subsp. majoranifolia (Miller) Hayek and incl. subsp. hungarica (Simonkai) Hayek ):

Like subsp. (a) but stem up to 45 cm; leaves up to 20 x 16 mm, with prominent veins beneath, particularly near the margin; calyx usually with crispate hairs. S.E. Europe, usually at lower altitudes than subsp. (a).

Plants intermediate between subspp. (a) and (b) have been given subspecific status. Examples are Calamintha alpina subsp.

nomismophylla Rech, fil., Denkschr. Akad. Wiss. Math.-Nat. Kl. (Wien) 105(1): 529 (1943), and subsp. elatior (Griseb.) Rech , fil., loc. cit. (1943), both from N. Greece (Khalkidhiki). The latter is like subsp. (a) but has short hairs on the calyx. They may merit recognition but further study is required throughout the range of the species.
