Plants in the eastern part of the range usually have densely hairy stems with patent hairs 1-2 mm, leaves and bracts deeply divided and calyx 4-5-5(-8) mm, and are often regarded as a separate species or subspecies ( subsp. villosus (Desf. ex Sprengel) Hyl. , Uppsala Univ. Ârsskr. 1945(7): 273 (1945)); those in the central and western part usually have glabrous or sparsely hairy stems with recurved hairs 0-5 mm, leaves and bracts shallowly lobed and calyx 3-5-4(-5) mm. Sparsely hairy variants, however, are sometimes found in E. Europe and occasionally plants with a mixture of patent and recurved hairs occur.
