Annual or short-lived perennial; stem 5-30 cm, usually much branched, glabrous to densely lanate-villous. Leaves 3-partite with linear segments 0-5-3(-4) mm wide, the segments sometimes 3-fid.

Bracts similar to the leaves. Flowers 2-4 at each node. Calyx 4-6 mm, the teeth as long as or shorter than the tube. Corolla yellow with red or purple markings, rarely entirely purple; tube about equalling calyx; upper lip entire. Stamens exserted; filaments hairy. Most of Europe except the north.
