Annual; stems up to 90 cm, trailing or climbing, very slender, pubescent to villous. Leaves glabrous or subglabrous, the lowest up to 3(-4-5) x 0-7(-l-4) cm, entire or with 1-2 teeth at the base, the middle and upper smaller, lanceolate-hastate to narrowly lanceolate-sagittate, acute; petiole equalling the lamina or shorter, somewhat twisted. Pedicels up to 3 -5 cm in flower, 2-5 times as long as the subtending leaf, filiform, glabrous, patent. Calyx-lobes linear-lanceolate, acute. Corolla 4-6 mm, whitish, tinged and striped with violet. Capsule 1 -5-2 mm, globose, thin-walled. Seeds c. 0-75 mm, tuberculate. Damp or shady places, especially on sandy soil, usually near the sea. W. Mediterranean region and S. W. Europe.
