(a) Subsp. spuria :

Sparsely to moderately hairy. Stems usually simple. Calyx-lobes 4-5 x 2-3 mm in flower, 5-8 x 2-4 mm in fruit, ovate-oblong, slightly cordate. Capsule 5 mm wide. Seeds 1-1 -25 mm. Throughout most o f the range o f the species, but rare in the Mediterranean region.
