Diagnosis. This species is distinguished from other species of the E. (En.) delumbis species group by the male hind tibia and swollen hind tarsomere 1 with very long dorsal setae ( Fig. 154 View FIGURES 154–159 ), setae on male terminalia long and slender, phallus with spiculate apex and subapical expansion and pair of narrow lateral lobes.

Description. Wing length 5.5–6.5 mm. Male. Similar to E. (En.) delumbis except as follows: head holoptic. Antenna with postpedicel long, slender, 6× longer than basal width. Palpus brown, with dark setulae and 1 long apical seta.

Thorax greyish brown in ground-colour. Scutum with narrow, faint brownish vittae along inner margin of dc; postpronotal lobe, postalar ridge and scutellum yellowish. Pleura with pale margins of katepisternum and anepimeron.

Legs slender, yellow, with apical portion of femora and tibia brownish, tarsomeres darker; coxae pale, in contrast to greyish pleura ( Fig. 154 View FIGURES 154–159 ). Fore tibia with 3 erect anterodorsal setae, longer than width of tibia; with circlet of preapical setae; anterior face with short appressed setae. Fore tarsomere 1 inflated, slightly narrower than width of tibia, with 2 long dorsal setae, longer than width of tarsomere, with fine ventral setae and biserial row of stronger setae, longer than width of tarsomere; tarsomeres 2–5 with biserial row of spine-like ventral setae; tarsomeres 1–4 with apicolateral pair of spine-like setae, longer than width of segment. Mid femur with erect, pale ventral setulae, length one-third width of femur, with strong preapical anterior seta. Mid tibia with 1–2 erect anterodorsal and posterodorsal setae; ventral and posterior faces with dense fine setulae; circlet of strong preapical setae. Mid tarsus slender; tarsomeres 1–5 with biserial row of spine-like ventral setae; tarsomeres 1–4 with apicolateral pair of spine-like setae, longer than width of segment. Hind femur with erect, pale ventral setulae, length one-third width of femur; 3 closely approximated preapical ventral protuberances, with dark, curved, flattened apices; apex with preapical row of 7–8 flattened, black posterior setae; preapical anterior seta strong, longer than width of femur; 1–2 preapical anterodorsal setae ( Figs 154–156 View FIGURES 154–159 ). Hind tibia with narrow base, without subbasal swelling and bend; basiventral swelling with posteroventral lobe with appressed apical setae; face of swelling with small circular ridge of depressed inner surface; long, numerous dorsal setae, length more than 3 times width of tibia; long setae on ventral surface ( Figs 154–156 View FIGURES 154–159 ). Hind tarsomere 1 inflated, with long dorsal setae similar to tibia, ventral stout setae longer than width of tarsomere; remaining tarsomeres similar to fore tarsus ( Fig. 154 View FIGURES 154–159 ).

Abdomen paler than thorax, subglossy. Pregenital segments modified: tergite 6 with posterior margin broadly U-shaped; posterolateral corner prolonged with long, dark marginal setae. Tergite 7 with rectangular invagination along posterior margin; posterolateral margin with strong, long dark setae; dorsolaterally with knob-like swelling. Tergite 8 divided into two sclerites: rectangular posterior sclerite, broadly separated from anterior sclerite fused laterally to sternite 8; posterior margin of sternite 8 and posterior sclerite of tergite 8 with long, dark marginal setae. Terminalia ( Figs 160, 161 View FIGURES 160–163 ): brown with long dense setae. Cercus short, L-shaped, projecting obliquely from epandrium; apical half rectangular with narrow apical projection; setae longer than width of cercus. Subepandrial process extending to either side of phallus. Epandrial lamella subrectangular, tapered, posterior margin rounded with short, upturned projection; setae longer than width of epandrium. Hypandrium long, tapered, apical margin truncate; setae shorter than length of hypandrium. Phallus ( Fig. 161 View FIGURES 160–163 ) with basal half gradually tapered; paired, slender lateral processes beyond mid-length; spiculate surface on subapical swelling and broad apex; ejaculatory apodeme half-length of epandrium, Y-shaped, with ventrally positioned lateral apodemes.

Female. Similar to male, except as follows: frons broader, slightly wider than anterior ocellus; hindleg without modified setae and processes; hind tibia with long anterodorsal and posterodorsal setae, twice width of tibia; ventral surfaces of mid and hind femora as in male; abdominal pleural membrane without darkened, expanded region; tergites 7 and 8 with pruinescence.

Geographical distribution and seasonal occurrence ( Fig. 174 View FIGURES 174–175 ). Empis (En.) floricola sp. nov. is known from the pan handle of Alaska south through British Columbia, Washington, Oregon and Idaho. Adults have been collected from May to August.

Etymology. The species name is Latin for flower (flora) and dweller (cola) in reference to the flower visiting habits of this and many other species of Empis .
