Diagnosis. This species is very similar to E. (En.) geneatis , distinguished by its larger size (wing length more than 6 mm), dense dorsal setae on the male hind femur, length more than twice femur width, and the male cercus is more rounded dorsally.
Description. Wing length 6.2–6.5 mm. Male. Similar to E. (En.) geneatis , except as follows: head with ocellar triangle with several pairs of posterior setulae. Scape 5× longer than pedicel.
Scutum without pair of greyish vittae. Postpronotum with numerous short, silky setae. Notopleuron clothed in long silky setae; 1 long pal and short silky setulae. Scutellum with pair of long sctl, with numerous pairs of long silky marginal setae.
Fore femur clothed in long, wavy setae, longer dorsally and posteriorly. Fore tibia with long posterodorsal setae, 3× longer than width of tibia; ventrally with fine, dense setae, subequal to width of segment. Hind tibia evenly expanded apically, not broader than femur distally.
Terminalia ( Fig. 187 View FIGURES 186–187 ): cercus broader than epandrium, suboval, rounded dorsally.
Female. Not confirmed.
Geographical distribution and seasonal occurrence ( Fig. 192 View FIGURES 192–193 ). Empis (En.) subgeneatis sp. nov. is known from Oregon. Adults have been collected in April and May and also possibly March and June.
Etymology. The species name is in reference to the similarity of this species with E. geneatis .
