Diagnosis. This species is only distinguishable from E. (En.) aerobatica on the basis of the male terminalia, where the phallic shaft projects beyond base of apical section of the phallus and the apical phallic section is not tapered, with apex expanded with teeth-like roughened outer margin.
Description. Wing length 4.5–5.7 mm. Male. Similar to E. (En.) aerobatica , except as follows: hind tibia with anteroventral digitiform process usually broader, with setae nearly as long or longer than length of process ( Fig. 72 View FIGURES 71–75 ).
Terminalia ( Figs 71 View FIGURES 71–75 , 78, 79 View FIGURES 76–79 ): cercus slightly longer than half length of epandrium; apex slightly truncate; dorsal margin somewhat concave near mid-length; setae shorter than width of cercus. Epandrial lamella with weakly upturned dorsal margin; posterior margin rounded. Hypandrium long, with tapered, pointed apical margin; without setae. Phallus gradually expanded beyond base, arched with smoothly rounded projection beyond mid-length; apical half not tapered, broad, gently curved, apex expanded with teeth-like roughened outer surface ( Fig. 79 View FIGURES 76–79 ). Ejaculatory apodeme with lateral apodemes projecting perpendicular at mid-length.
Female. Similar to female of E. (En.) aerobatica .
Geographical distribution and seasonal occurrence ( Fig. 80 View FIGURES 80–81 ). Empis (En.) paraerobatica sp. nov. is known from Oregon and California. Adults have been collected from April to July.
Etymology. The specific name is derived from the Greek para meaning near and aerobatica , in reference to the similarity with E. (En.) aerobatica .
Nuptial gift presentation. Form unknown.
