The diagnostic characteristics that define this species are: dorsal surface of the head smooth and shiny; head length more than 1.1 times mesosoma length; anterior margin of pronotum without carina; humeri rounded; postpetiolar node smooth and shiny; antenna with 11 antennomeres.
Nesomyrmex tonsuratus is unusual in collections, although it is widely distributed in Central and South America ( Table 1). In Ecuador this species was collected using Malaise trap and canopy fogging in Amazonian pristine lowland rainforests.
