Source. In the binomen Prostoma lombricoideum by Dugès (1830: 74, pl. 2, fig. 2).

Type locality. Not explicitly mentioned in the original description; deemed to be Montpellier, France ( Fig. 9 ), by later authors (e.g., Böhmig in Mojsisovics 1893; Joubin 1894).

Etymology. Adjective, lombricoideus, - a, - um; from the Latin masculine noun lUmbrīcUs (genitive lUmbrīcī) and the Latin suffix - oideus (“resembling”).

Remarks. The nemertean attribution of P. lombricoideum may be supported by documentation of the proboscis observed in this species ( Dugès 1830), although it lacks any definitive illustration. Frequent incorrect spellings include lumbricoideum (e.g., Hallez 1910a, b; Monticelli 1916; Vialli 1927) and lumbricoides (e.g., Bürger 1895: 591; Böhmig in Mojsisovics 1893: 479). Prostoma lombricoideum was regarded as a valid name by Stiasny-Wijnhoff (1938: 226, as “ P. lumbricoïdeum ”) but as a nomen dubium by Gibson & Moore (1976: 194, as “ lumbricoideum ”). Gibson (1995: 496) listed Prostoma lombricoideum as an invalid name. It is herein considered synonymous with P. clepsinoides .
