Source. In the binomen Prostoma hercegovinense by Tarman (1961: 183).

Type locality. Two caves in Bosnia and Herzegovina; one near Zavala in Vjetrenica, the other in Bileća ( Fig. 9 View FIGURE 9 ) .

Etymology. Adjective, hercegovinensis, - is, - e, meaning “from Hercegovina ”.

Remarks. Prostoma hercegovinense , one of three stygobiont nominal species in the genus, has been regarded as a valid taxon by subsequent researchers ( Gibson 1995: 495; Chernyshev et al. 1998: 61; Sundberg & Gibson 2008: 62). Chernyshev et al. (1998: 62) noted that distinguishing P. hercegovinense from P. puteale Beauchamp, 1932 would be difficult due to the simple original description of the former. It is herein considered synonymous with P. puteale until future studies prove otherwise.
