9. graecense Böhmig, 1893 View in CoL

Source. In the binomen Tetrastemma graecensis [sic] by Böhmig in Mojsisovics (1893: LXXXII [82]).

Type locality. A waterbody in a botanical garden in Graz , Styria, Austria ( Fig. 9 View FIGURE 9 ) .

Etymology. Latin adjective, graecensis , - is, - e, meaning “from Graz”, while in many other cases it also refers to “from Greece ”.

Remarks. The species name “ Tetrastemma graecensis ” was proposed during a presentation by Ludwig Böhmig at a meeting of the zoology section of the Naturwissenschaftlicher Verein für Steiermark [Natural-Science Association of Styria] on 17 December 1892. The contents of Böhmig’s talk were included in a report by Mojsisovics (1893: LXXXII–LXXXIX [82–89]). The author of the name graecensis ( graecense ) is therefore Böhmig, rather than Mojsisovics, according to Article 50.2. Strict adherence to Recommendation 51E would be that the author of graecense be cited as ‘Böhmig in Mojsisovics, 1893 ’. In the present paper, however, it is simplified as ‘Böhmig, 1893’. Mojsisovics’ article appeared in Volume 29 of the Mittheilungen des naturwissenschaftlichen Vereines für Steiermark, which contained various reports of the Verein ’s activity in 1892 (Jahrgang 1892, ‘business year 1892’). While “ Jahrgang 1892 ” is printed on the title page of the volume, the actual publication year, 1893, is also printed on the same title page. The publication date of the name graecensis is thus 1893, although it has long been erroneously ascribed to 1892 in all subsequent literature to the best of my knowledge (e.g., Bürger 1895: 590; Bürger 1904: 69; Gibson & Moore 1976: 200; Gibson 1995: 516; Chernyshev et al. 1998: 61; Kajihara 2007: 311).

Prostoma graecense View in CoL was fully described by Böhmig (1898) and has been regarded as valid by many researchers (e.g., Stiasny-Wijnhoff 1938: 227; Gibson & Moore 1976: 203; Chernyshev et al. 1998: 61; Sundberg & Gibson 2008: 62). The invalidation of P. graecense View in CoL as a junior synonym of P. clepsinoides View in CoL will likely cause confusion, but the Principle of Priority is strictly adhered in this study (see Discussion below). Gibson (1995: 495) erroneously indicated Prostoma graecense View in CoL as the type species for Prostoma View in CoL .
