Subcosmopolitan, composed of approximately 434 species, distributed in two subfamilies: Trichomanoideae C. Presl , which includes eight genera with tubular involucrae, and Hymenophylloideae Burnett. with a single genus Hymenophyllum Sm. , characterized by bivalvate involucrae ( PPG 2016; Gonzatti et al. 2020). In Brazil, there are seven genera and around 83 species recorded ( Gonzatti & Windisch 2023).
