A specimen of Anilius scytale (Linnaeus, 1758) figured by Fürbringer (1870: plate 3, fig. 45) has ossified anterior and dorsal elements in addition to the femur, and a cartilaginous ventral element; but a micro-CT-scanned specimen of the same species (SAMA R36774) reveals only a femur and an ossified anterior element (i.e. no ossified ventral or dorsal elements) ( Fig. 2Q). The same is true also of another radiographed specimen (ZFMK 47668). McDowell (1975) also mentions the presence of only a single pelvic element in Anilius .
