Type species. Mutilla harmonia Fox, 1899 (female), by original designation (junior subjective synonym of Mutilla (Sphaeropthalma) bexar Blake, 1871 (male), according to Krombein, 1951a: 762).
Taxonomic history. Junior subjective synonym of Dasymutilla Ashmead, 1899 according to Mickel, 1928: 43, 44. Senior (actually junior) subjective synonym of Pycnomutilla Ashmead, 1904 (actually André, 1902) according to Bradley, 1916: 191. Subjectively invalid name.
Sex association. The male of the type species was associated and identified (as Mutilla (Sphaeropthalma) bexar Blake, 1871: 238 ) by Krombein, 1951a:762.
Distribution. Nearctic.
