Type species. Agama imperialis Blake, 1871 (male), by automatic designation (see Photopsis Blake, 1886 ). The supposed designation of Agama imperialis Blake, 1871 by Mickel, 1928: 29 is invalid.

Taxonomic history. Objectively invalid name: junior homonym of Agama Daudin, 1802 (Reptilia) ; replaced by Photopsis Blake, 1886: 179 . (Reduced to subgeneric status (in Mutilla Linnaeus, 1758 ) by Dalla Torre, 1897: 5 as senior synonym of Photopsis Blake, 1886 and Tricholabiodes Radoszkowski, 1885 . Junior subjective synonym of Ephuta Say, 1836 according to André, 1902c: 51.)
