Type species. Mutilla ruficeps Smith, 1855 (female), by original designation.

Taxonomic history. Raised to generic status by Ashmead, 1899: 57. Reduced to subgeneric status (in Mutilla Linnaeus, 1758 ) by André, 1902 b: 377. Reinstated to generic status by André, 1902c: 47. Valid generic name.

Sex association. The male of the type species was associated and described by Sichel & Radoszkowski, 1869: 168 (although misidentified as Mutilla erythrocephala Fabricius ).

Distribution. Palaearctic, Oriental.
